Richard Pell was a police constable stationed at Roston, near Ashbourne. With the permission of the Chief Constable of the Derbyshire Constabulary, he enlisted in the Grenadier Guards in November, 1914. He was sent out to France as part of a draft of reinforcements, and took part in many severe engagements. It was in the Somme offensive that he received 22 wounds, including a broken arm, broken leg and several fractured ribs. He was removed in a helpless condition to Rouen, and from there to Cardiff Hospital, where he finally succumbed to his wounds. He had been promoted on the field a few days before he received his fatal injuries.
